A guide to

Smart Meters

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter is a new type of gas and electricity meter that digitally records energy
consumption in real time. Your energy supplier receives accurate meter readings
automatically, saving you hassle and ensuring accurate billing. A portable in home display
shows the amount of energy you’re using and what it’s costing.

What can it tell me?

Your smart meter display shows exactly how much energy you’re using in pounds and
pence. This should help you take steps to use energy more efficiently. Even by switching off
the lights in one room, you’ll see your usage on your display go down. Over time, you could
be able to make some big energy savings.

When will I get a smart meter?

By 2020, every home across Great Britain will be offered a smart meter at no extra cost. At
this time you will have to provide manual readings to OneSelect, but we are in the process
of adopting smart meter technology. If you currently have a smart meter installed, you may
lose some or all of their functionality when you switch.

What is the in home display?

Your in home display makes it really easy to understand your energy usage. Traffic lights
show you at a glance how much gas and electricity you’re using in real time. If the lights are
red, you’re using a lot – if they’re green your use is low – it really is that straightforward.

How does this affect my bill?

We’ll receive your meter readings automatically, so no more fumbling around in the meter
cupboard with a torch. With regular reads we can give you accurate bills instead of
estimated ones and you’ll only pay for what you use – just like your phone bill.
